School History

Since its establishment in 1966, Grissom Elementary has proudly served the Southwest Houston community as a pre-kindergarten through 5th grade school located at 4900 Simsbrook Drive, Houston, TX 77045.  On March 5, 1968, the school was officially named in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Virgil Ivan “Gus” Grissom, one of NASA's pioneering Mercury and Gemini astronauts

Growth & Recognition

  • Operating in a traditional academic calendar for 42 years, Grissom adopted a year-round schedule for two years in the mid-1970s to better serve its growing student body Houston Independent School District.

  • Grissom earned statewide recognition in 20062008, and 2009 with the Texas Education Agency’s Recognized rating, and reached the pinnacle of performance with an Exemplary rating in 2010 Houston Independent School District.

  • In 2006, it was also featured among the Top Public Schools in Texas by the National Center for Educational Accountability, a UT-affiliated research group

  • In 2024, it began the journey as an HISD NES campus
